Mothman

On April 12, 1966, near Clendenin, West Virginia, five men at a local cemetery spotted what they described as "a brown human shape with wings" flying behind the trees before then flying over their heads. Three days after this initial sighting, the creature was spotted again by two married couples driving past an abandoned TNT plant near Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette explained that after initially spotting the creature, they attempted to drive away from it, exceeding 100 miles per hour. However, the "big bird" was able to keep up with their car without so much as flapping its wings. As more and more sightings of this "big bird" were reported, a newspaper copyeditor gave the creature its now famous name: Mothman.

The creature is most often described as being humanoid, standing between six and seven feet, lacking a discernable head on its shoulders, with dark skin coloration ranging from black to dark grey to brown. There seem to be two constants in descriptions of the Mothman: a pair of large wings, reported as spanning up to ten feet, and a large pair of eyes, often depicted as glowing bright red. Several reported sightings of the Mothman have stated that the creature emits high pitched sounds that have been compared to a squeaking fan belt, a woman's shriek, or a large generator winding up.

While there have been no known instances of Mothman doing direct physical harm to humans (though it has been known to abduct pet dogs), it has exhibited abilities resembling a form of psionic attack. In its presence, radio and television signals have been known to become scrambled and distorted, while unfortunate humans who have met its gaze have reported feelings of sudden, debilitating fear, which supposedly drove some victims to suicide. Furthermore, a number of people who have encountered Mothman - and even some who have only worked on projects related to it - have died under sudden and mysterious circumstances.

Although Mothman seems to have retired from the stage of cryptozoology, there are still occasional reports of sightings, sometimes coinciding with bridge collapses like the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant. Mothman should be considered a highest-level threat, and should only be pursued/researched under the most controlled of circumstances.
